Lanolin

Lanolin, also know as wool wax, is a soft yellow substance found on sheep skin. This wax is waterproof and helps to protect the sheep's wool. Although other companies have used a chemical process to extract it, lanolin can easily be extracted by hand squeezing or use of machines.

What does it do?

- Lanolin is similar to our skins natural sebum, so is easily absorbed. This makes it a great moisturizer for the skin and hair!

- Lanolin is full of fatty acids that feed and nourish the skin.

- Lanolin is also very protective for the skin and hair.

- Lanolin makes the skin feel plumper, hence why we use it in Skin's Shangri La!

Bergamot Oil

Bergamot is a fruit that looks a bit like a small orange and is most commonly found in Earl Grey Tea. Bergamot is also used to flavor cakes and beverages in Southern Italy and Sicily. Bergamot is often used in aromatherapy to help treat SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorders) in winter months.

What does it do?

- Bergamot has a light, fruity and floral fragrance that is said to be a natural antidepressant. People often link bergamot to mental clarity.

- Bergamot is also super relaxing.

- Bergamot is antibacterial which is perfect on acne prone skin.

Avocado

Avocados are a fruit we use in our products, most of which we source organically. Organic fruit is free from pesticides! There are over 500 varieties of avocado in the world. Avocado has high levels of vitamins A, B, C and E has even been claimed to help relieve eczema. The avocado oil which the fruit produces is highly nutritious and sinks easily into the skin and hair. Our avocado butter comes straight from the flesh of the fruit.

What does it do?

- Avocados contain lots of healthy fats which hydrate and nourish the skin, keeping it in good condition.

- The high vitamin E content of an avocado can help reduce signs of aging, making the skin look plump and healthy.

Vanilla

Vanilla beans come from the vanilla orchid, which can be found in Madagascar and Indonesia. Each plant is pollinated by hand! We currently use several different variations of vanilla: vanilla water, vanilla absolute, vanilla extract, vanilla pods, vanilla pod infusion, vanilla powder and vanilla pod powder! The vanilla pods we use come from South America and the West Indies. A lot of the vanilla we use is Fairtrade, for example in creamy candy bubble bar and butter ball bath ballistic, and comes from Uganda. Vanilla is incredibly expensive, and is the second most expensive spice after saffron!

What does it do?

- Vanilla has a lovely, sweet aroma.

- Vanillin, the main source of vanillas scent, is said to be an antioxidant.

- The sugars in vanilla act as a humectant; creating a barrier and keeping moisture in the skin.

- Vanilla is a luxury ingredient. A true pampering treat!

Spearmint oil

Spearmint oil is extracted from the flowers of the plant, using steam. Although it is native to the Mediterranean, we use Chinese spearmint oil. Spearmint is commonly used in toothpaste, mouthwash and gum and, when combined with peppermint, it becomes doublemint!

What does it do?

- Peppermint has a sweet, minty aroma used to perfume our products.

- Peppermint oil livens up dull skin and leaves it feeling refreshed.

- Peppermint oil is cooling and reviving, making it perfect for our Fairtrade Foot Lotion.

- Aromatherapists use peppermint oil for skin conditions, headaches and stress!

Witch Hazel

Common witch hazel is native to North America, and produces vivid yellow flowers. It is said to have leaves that are similar to the hazel plant, which is where the plant may have got it's name. To extract the witch hazel, the bark and twigs of the plant are dried and then steamed.

What does it do?

- Witch hazel is antibacterial, protecting against bacteria. Good news for Grease Lightning, bad news for spots!

- Witch hazel is anti-inflammatory, helping to prevent irritation on sensitive or red skin.

- Witch hazel is astringent, which means it has a tightening effect. So that's why Ayesha is good for that instant 'lifted' feeling!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olives grow on trees that can live for thousands of years. The oil can be extracted using machinery, although extraction by hand is the preferred method. Extra virgin olive oil preserves the most of the olives nutritious qualities and gives the oil a greener color. Olive oil has been used for many years: ancient Egyptians mixed it with beeswax as a cleanser, and ancient Greeks used it for massage.

What does it do?

- Olive oil contains Hydroxytyrosol: said to be the most powerful antioxidant in the world!

Charcoal

Charcoal is carbonized wood, which is burned in kilns for up to sixteen hours. We use local Dorset charcoal which is more expensive, but it is high quality and sustainable. We are proud to support a local business and use ingredients that don't disturb the natural Eco-system.

Sandalwood oil comes from the sandalwood tree, which has be at least thirty years old before it is ready to harvest. The oil is extracted from the inner heartwood using steam distillation. We use Caledonian and Australian sandalwood oil.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa has been used for many years, dating back to the Aztecs! Cocoa butter comes from the seeds of the cacao tree in tropical America (also named ‘the food of the gods’). To make the butter, the seeds are fermented, cleaned, roasted and cracked to form cocoa nibs. These nibs are ground to a thick oily paste called chocolate liquor which, when the fat is removed using high pressure, becomes cocoa butter. Unlike most fats or butters, cocoa butter is solid at room temperature.

What does it do?

Honey

Honey is the sweet, gooey liquid made by bees from the pollen they collect from flowers. The color, smell and taste of the honey all depend on where it comes from in the world! Honey has been used for thousands of years in hair care and skincare. Legend has it that Cleopatra bathed in a mixture of honey and milk to soften her skin! Our honey comes from a variety of sources including Zambia, Canada, Hungary, Greece and, of course, Great Britain! It our aim to produce more of our own honey in the UK.

Rose Oil

'Rose' comes from the arabic word meaning perfume and is assumed to be the first essential oil ever to be distilled. Rose oil is made up of over 300 parts which creates a complex fragrance. Our rose oil comes from the Damask rose, grown in Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, India and China and is extracted by steam distillation. Rose oil is more expensive than rose absolute as the extraction produces less oil.

What does it do?

- Rose oil is considered to be an aphrodisiac. Sexy! But it's also a symbol of love and innocence.

- Rose oil has been used to balance the mood since ancient Greece

- Rose oil is very smoothing, making it great on mature or dryer skin

Lavender Oil

There are nearly thirty different types of lavender, but we just use a few of these. Our lavender oil is made from the flowering tops of the plant, using steam distillation.

What does it do?

- Lavender oil is relaxing, can help reduce stress and aids restful sleep.

- Lavender oil is healing. A French chemist, Gattefosse, burnt his arm and put it into a vat of lavender oil, thinking it was water. The burn healed much quicker than normal!

- Lavender oil is soothing on sore or irritated skin, helping to reduce redness

- Lavender oil is antiseptic and antibacterial, preventing and reducing infection

- Lavender oil is also deodorizing, leaving a sweet, floral scent.

Chamomile Blue Oil

Chamomile blue oil is extracted from flowers using steam distillation and is a vibrant blue colour. The more vibrant the blue, the fresher the oil! We use a combination of Roman and German chamomile blue in our products. Chamomile blue is suitable for children and people with super sensitive skin.

What does it do?

- Chamomile blue is anti-inflammatory, great for soothing sore skin and scalps

- Chamomile blue is a natural antiseptic, reducing the likelihood of infections of the skin

- Chamomile blue is a sedative, helping to calm the mind, reduce stress and induce sleep. It's even been used by aromatherapists to ease period pain!

Glycerine

Glycerine is a clear, mild, ‘gooey’ liquid. Traditionally, it was obtained from animal fat but Lush get ours from rapeseed oil grown in the UK and EU. When an alkaline ingredient is added to a vegetable oil, glycerine is born!

What does it do?

- Glycerine is a humectant, which means it helps retain moisture in the skin and hair!

Lavender Honey Water

Lavender honey water is just as it sounds; a beautiful, handmade mixture of French lavender, honey and water.

Here, the coconut groves help sustain the local community, who are at risk from earthquakes and tsunamis.

Kaolin

Kaolin (also known as china clay) is a naturally occurring soft clay that can be found in the mountains and in river beds.

What does it do?
